TIPS TO CRACK APPSC GROUP 1 EXAM


After the decision of Andhra Pradesh government on Combined exam for Group 1 and Group 2 executive posts,some students are enquiring about
“How to prepare for Group-1 exam?”,”what are the reference books?” , “Attending coaching classes is necessary?” , “Coaching center details?” By keeping above questions in mind this post will cover some information on How to start,where to start and what to read….
Pattern of Group 1 Exam:
Group 1 exam will be conducted in 3 stages
Step 1:
Preliminary exam is a qualifying exam,consists of one paper for 150 marks 150 objective questions. This is the most important stage why because most of the candidates will be filtered in this stage only. This paper covers the topics like Indian History,Indian Polity,Andhra history,General Science,Mental Ability,Disaster management and Current Affairs.

History: Start history with class notes if you have and follow ncert or state syllabus books from 6th to 10th. And if possible also refer ncert 11th and 12th old books for ancient ,medival and modern history. Concentrate on the facts as appsc is more concentrating on the facts.
Polity: Laxmikanth will cover most of the topics and revise this book as much as possible. For latest updates and Amendments go through the monthly magazines.
Andhra history: Concentrate on this,complete reading of one book either P R Rao or BSL Hanumantha rao.Follow old papers,most of the questions are repeating.
Current Affairs: Follow one magazine thoroughly and divide them monthly wise.Concentrate mostly on last six months events. This is the deciding section most of them are fact based and easy to cover. Refer RC Reddy year book on current affairs available in the month of April/may.It covers all the information on current affairs topic wise.
Disaster management: CBSE publications and previous papers as appsc repeating most of them.
Economy: Cover Economy part in Magazines.
Along with these take all previous GS papers of last six months conducted by APPSC.Most of the current affairs questions are repeating.
Step 2 Mains :
Depending on the no of posts,in the ratio of 1:50 candidates will be selected for mains. Mains exam contains 5 papers along with General English paper. English paper marks are not counted in the final score as it is only a qualifying paper.
Remaining 5 papers consists of 150 marks each. Candidate has to answer 15 questions in 3 sections within 3 hours of time.
Paper wise details:
Paper 1: In General Essay Paper out of 9 essays 3 has to answer each one from every section.
1. Identify the key topics section wise based on happenings in the last six to eight months.
2. Gather information from different sources and consolidate them according to requirements.
3. Daily news paper reading will give an extra edge in this paper.
4. Practice writing on each topic and compare with the original notes.
5. Try to organize the points and remember the flow as you have to complete the whole essay within 1 hour including rough work.
6. Rewrite on the same topic to get mastery over the topic.
Paper 2: In this paper, section 1 will cover Indian History,section 2 will cover Andhra History and Indian Polity will be covered in the last section.
Books:
Indian History : Spectrum modern India,Bipin Chandra ncert 11th class.ncert old books on history.
Andhra History: P. Raghunanthan Rao Andhra Pradesh History and BSL Hanumantha Rao,Telugu Academy book.
Polity: Laxmikanth’s book will give you complete Idea,read topic wise. For more analysis read DD Basu.
Paper 3: Most important and difficult paper as material is not fully available.In this paper section 1 will cover Indian Economy and section 2 and 3 covers AP Economy.
Books: section 1 Pratiyogitha Darpan for English medium and Dutt and Sundaram . Follow required topics only.Telugu academy is good for telugu medium .
For 2 and 3 sections,Refer 50 years of Andhra Pradesh and latest socio-economic survey for updates.
Paper 4: Consist of Science and Technology and Life science sections.Creates problem for telugu medium candidates but good scoring paper.
Books:Start with state syllabus 6th to 10th Biology books. For section 1 use current affairs magazines and Internet. For section 2 biology books are sufficient. Anji Reddy’s book and Kaushik and kaushik book on environmental studies are informative and useful for 3rd section.
Paper 5: In this paper first two sections are good for scoring and the last section is intended to test the awareness and decision making skills of the candidate. For section 1 and section 2 RS Agarwal,Data Interpretation by Tyra and Kundan and Spectrum Stats book for civils mains are suggestible.
Coaching:
If time and money permits attend the coaching classes,they will provide the basic information and what to read,but it is not mandatory to attend all the papers. Identify your limitations,and take guidance in those areas. Attend the classes of paper wise experts.
